On our way to decrease methane emissions – FGSZ receives OGMP „Gold Standard”

2022. 11. 04.

The Gold Standard certification of the organisation can be achieved by those companies that provide a detailed implementation programme concerning the exact amount and reduction of methane emission.

Lead by UNEP, together with the European Commission, the government of the United Kingdom, the Environmental Defense Fund, and major companies of the oil- and gas industry, OGMP (Oil- and Gas Methane Partnership) 2.0 aims at reducing methane emission, while supporting the realisation of a well-structured, industry-specific monitoring, reporting, and certification system.

Annual reports assembled within the framework of this initiative meet the strictest methane reporting requirements, since companies must provide data concerning their whole operation and every piece of their equipment, based on internationally accepted methodologies.

FGSZ set out serious goals regarding methane emission reduction: based on 2015 base year data, we will reduce our emission by 50% until 2025 and by 60% till 2030.

Our LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) project played a key role in obtainng the certification: launched 5 months ago, the project aims at detecting and eliminating natural gas leakages.  The goal of LDAR is to reduce our natural gas loss and methane emission, thus contributing to domestic and sector-related greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts as well as the global fight against climate change. Thanks to the work performed in the project, we achieved an annual 11,000 m3 gas saving by optimizing our processes and immediately repairing detected leakages. Our aim is to detect natural gas leakages completely and effectively, equipped with state-of-the-art detecting and measuring instruments by the first half of 2023, and to incorporate leakage prevention tasks into our basic maintenance activity.
